The City is a Circle: Philosophers’ Walk

Join us for the third event in The City is a Circle, a series of free walks, talks, and urban adventures on the Atlanta BeltLine, running the second Sunday of each month through April 2024.

Reflect on ancient philosophy and engage in stimulating discussions inspired by the Eastside Trail during this free walk, led by Dr. Peter Wakefield and curated by Art on the Atlanta BeltLine’s 2022-2023 Scholar-in-Residence, Rachel Parish.

Participants will break into small groups and walk a section of the Eastside Trail, armed with passages from ancient texts to be read aloud and discussed. Each person will be invited to reflect on how the experience of discussing while walking through such an urban setting affects their learning experience and reflections.

The walk will take place from the Shed at Ponce City Market to the Corinthian Column near Historic Fourth Ward Skatepark. All participants are encouraged to wear comfortable clothing and bring water for the walk.

About Dr. Peter Wakefield:
Peter W. Wakefield, Ph.D., is a philosopher, college teacher, and cyclist on the streets of Atlanta. His research and ongoing interest in the dialogues of Plato inspire discussions in his classrooms that focus on justice and beauty and seek to find the contemporary power of ancient philosophy. In close collaboration with colleagues, he teaches in Emory University’s interdisciplinary Institute for the Liberal Arts (ILA), which fosters experimental pedagogies that bring faculty together from across disciplines and promote student-centered learning about the intersections of philosophy, literature, natural science, visual culture, and other disciplines.
