Historic Fourth Ward Park Has a Brand New Shade Structure!

A brand new shade structure has opened at Historic Fourth Ward Park, and it’s just in time for sunny weather! In a ceremony hosted by the Historic Fourth Ward Park Conservancy, the ribbon was cut on the shade structure on Friday, March 20. Historic Fourth Ward Park Conservancy Board Chair, Liz Coyle, led remarks, thanking the partners that helped the Conservancy make the project happen.

Historic Fourth Ward Park has become a popular destination for the community since 2011. Year-round, families use the fields, the outdoor theater, and the playgrounds. In the summer, the splashpad is full of children cooling off, but the young trees planted when the park was constructed are years away from providing substantial shade. People occasionally even brought their own pop-up tents to enjoy the park without the sun’s intensity. The shade provides much-needed relief, especially for families with young children.

A Park Pride matching grant provided $16,000 toward the structure, which was designed pro-bono by Smith Dalia Architects, and constructed by Astra Group. Atlanta BeltLine, Inc.’s Landscape Architecture team managed construction, and along with the City of Atlanta Department of Parks and Recreation, were heavily involved in the design, permitting and approval processes.
