Atlanta Beltline design and construction projects July 2021
Northeast Trail
Northeast Trail, Segment 1: In the next few months, ABI will install additional gravel on the unpaved Northeast Trail from Monroe Drive to the newly paved portion of Segment 2. Once work begins, it is expected to take approximately 30 days to complete and will require intermittent and limited trail closures.
Northeast Trail – Segment 2, Phase II: The complete drawings are expected to be ready to bid for construction by late fall to extend Phase I for the full 1.2 miles between Westminster Drive and Mayson Street and to build out the remaining elements of Phase I (lighting, security cameras, and landscaping). This work will proceed to construction once SSD funding is finalized.
Northeast Trail – Segments 3-6: A virtual community meeting took place on July 15 to update on progress on the trail design and potential alignments for trail and transit around I-85 and Armor-Ottley on Segment 3 of the trail. Two options for crossing the railroad corridor have been submitted to Norfolk Southern for review, and one of the options appears to be workable from the perspective of the railroad. Design work continues to progress for segments 4, 5, and 6. View the meeting recording and / or download the presentation.
Details on each Northeast Trail segment can be found in our design and construction updates section: Segment 1, Segment 2, Segments 3-6.
Eastside Trail
Ponce de Leon Avenue Streetscapes: ABI’s contractor will proceed with work on Ponce streetscapes in July. The project is expected to last 18 months through December of 2022. The streetscapes will improve pedestrian and cycling conditions between Boulevard and Freedom Parkway and build ramp access between the street and the Eastside Trail.
Capital Improvements: Starting in July, ABI will be adding a 2-foot wide soft shoulder to both sides of the Eastside Trail between Monroe Drive and Irwin Street. Work is wrapping up at Drewry Street to mitigate storm water issues. Final grading and seeding is expected to be complete by the beginning of August.

Southside Trail
Southside Trail – Segment 1: Work on the first segment of the paved Southside Trail is nearly finished with an estimated completion date coming later this summer. Please stay tuned for news about a grand opening for this segment.

Southside Trail – Segments 2, 3, 4, and 5: The City and ABI submitted an application at the beginning of July for a FY21 USDOT RAISE grant in July for $22 million to support construction of almost 2 miles of the Southside Trail within segments 2 and 3, from Pittsburgh Yard by the Downtown Connector to Boulevard. The drawings for the Southside Trail are at 90% complete and work is in progress to align and confirm budgets and bring the drawings to 100% complete. The cost to construct these segments will be covered by SSD funding. Federal grants will also be used for Segments 2 and 3.
Details on each Southside Trail segment can be found in our design and construction updates section: Segment 1 (West Segment) and Segments 2, 3, 4, and 5.
Westside Trail
Westside Trail – Segment 3: Construction continues by the PATH Foundation in conjunction with ABI on this 1.2 mile-long segment between Law Street and Huff Road along Marietta Boulevard. New curbs have been installed along much of the project length and forms have been set for concrete pouring. Storm water reconfiguration and repairs, and utility relocations are also underway. The multi-use trail is anticipated to be complete by early 2022.
Westside Trail – Segment 4: A virtual meeting was held on July 26 to present the community with the design of the preferred concept alignment for this 1.3-mile trail segment that extends the Westside Trail north from Washington Park to the intersection of Westside Beltline Connector north of Hollowell Parkway. The next step will be to have the preferred concept alignment go into design development. View the meeting recording and / or download the presentation.
Details on each Westside Trail segment can be found in our design and construction updates section: Segment 3 and Segment 4.
