SEPTEMBER 04, 2024

Since 2019, Atlanta Beltline Art’s Beltline After Dark has brought free, family-friendly arts programming to the corridor, making it a staple of the annual exhibition season.

This year’s presentation will feature PhaeMonae's “Amplified Body” - a multi-disciplinary production designed to embody the essence of hip-hop's emergence by mirroring the rhythmic lifecycle of the cicada.

PhaeMonae and her artistic collaborators, Magdalena, LaMia Dingle and Cailan Orn, have created an immersive, interactive experience set to uplift female voices and “amplify untold stories” through sculpture, dance, fashion and soundscapes.

The arc of the performance will follow the life-span of the cicada, presented in four, 30-minute phases over the 2-hour run-time: emergence; search for community; expression of joy through the process of creation; and the culminating phase, existing as one body as a means of survival.

A performance highlight: the unveiling of a 16-foot-long, 6-foot-high cicada sculpture, illuminated with UV-activated paint, crafted by Magdalena.

WHERE: Atlanta’s Westside Park, Entrance 1 - 1621 Johnson Road NW, Atlanta, 30318

WHEN: Saturday, September 28, 6:30 - 8:30 p.m.
The two-hour production will be presented in four, 30-minute segments

About PhaeMonae: PhaeMonae is a movement, wardrobe and sound engineer who has had a long-standing artistic relationship with artistic collaborators Magdalena, Lamia Dingle and Cailan Orn. PhaeMonae is interested in bridging the unique talents possessed by each team member to create beautiful and meaningful artwork that honors both hip-hop and the cicada. They also believe in using mostly reclaimed, recycled, reused materials for the betterment of the planet and as a direct homage to hip-hop turning its rags to riches. The group places value in having a collaborative creative process where all parts work in relation to each other in order to bring forth bold ideas. Through research and discovery within each collective area of expertise in choreography, sound exploration, wearable art, fashion, puppeteering and welding/fabrication, the group hopes to share knowledge and rotate leadership.
