Streetcar East Extension
MARTA’s Atlanta Streetcar East Extension project marks the initial expansion of the existing downtown Streetcar. This extension will expand the Atlanta Streetcar service from downtown to the Beltline’s Eastside Trail.
Governance
The Streetcar East Extension and other transit projects supported through the More MARTA program are governed by an intergovernmental agreement (IGA) between the City of Atlanta and MARTA. Created in 2020, this agreement establishes a joint decision-making framework that guides planning, design, construction, and operations. Under this structure:
Joint committees are authorized to evaluate and guide project decisions,
Atlanta Beltline, Inc.’s President & CEO serves on the Program Governance Committee, one of multiple technical, advisory, and stakeholder committees that oversee More MARTA project delivery.
Atlanta Beltline, Inc. staff is included in the Program Management Team which oversees the day-to-day technical work on More MARTA projects to provide insight and support on Beltline-related More MARTA projects,
Recommendations move through formal, public review and approval processes.
This governance model is designed to ensure coordination, accountability, and transparency across agencies.

Project Update
The Streetcar East Extension project is at approximately 30% design. This project is currently paused as broader discussions take place around the reprioritization of More MARTA-funded projects.
