Atlanta Beltline to Begin Bennett Street Demolition, Advancing Future Northwest Trail
Work begins in August and is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

The Atlanta Beltline is moving forward with another pivotal milestone in completing the future Northwest Trail.
In mid-August, demolition of six vacant buildings totaling approximately 75,000 square feet will begin at Bennett Street. This work will prepare the site for future trail construction, infrastructure improvements, and long-term redevelopment.
Located near Piedmont Atlanta Hospital, the 3.2-acre property is the Beltline’s first acquisition around Peachtree Road. The site is part of Northwest Trail – Segment 2A and fills a critical gap between Segments 1 and 2 where no existing rail corridor exists.
The Bennett Street site is also key to the Georgia Department of Transportation's (GDOT) future replacement of the Peachtree Road bridge, which is currently scheduled to begin in 2028. Completing the demolition will allow GDOT to move forward with the bridge project while also making room for the future Northwest Trail.
During the bridge replacement project, the Beltline plans to provide an interim at-grade crossing across Peachtree Road to maintain connectivity for trail users. Once the new bridge is complete, the temporary route will be removed, and the permanent Beltline trail will be constructed beneath Peachtree Road.
Businesses located at the west end of Bennett Street will remain open throughout demolition activities.
While demolition is the immediate focus, the property’s long-term vision extends beyond the trail. The Beltline plans to add a mixed-use, mixed-income development project directly along the future Northwest Trail, expanding access to housing and economic opportunity in one of Atlanta's most sought-after neighborhoods.
As with all Beltline projects, the site will undergo a robust planning and community engagement process before redevelopment begins, giving residents, businesses, and stakeholders the opportunity to help shape its future.
The demolition at Bennett Street represents an important step toward completing the Northwest Trail, supporting future transportation enhancements, and laying the groundwork for a more connected, accessible, and affordable Atlanta. View the latest study group meeting for updates here.
Please note: The Bennett Street demolition is separate from the Murphy Crossing (MC) demolition project and separate from work occurring at the Milton Avenue property. Although these projects are advancing simultaneously, each follows its own schedule and scope.
