On Monday, June 19, 2023, the full length of the Southside Trail between Glenwood Avenue and Boulevard will be closed for construction. The contractor, Reeves Young, is in the process of staging trailers, starting erosion control, and placing construction fencing. Construction is expected to be completed in the spring of 2025.

Suggested detour routes are below and will be posted along the trail access points. Please note that these are suggestions and there are more possible routes. People should decide on a route that works best for their safety, comfort level, and mode of transportation.

Segments 2 and 3 – the unpaved portion between Boulevard and University Avenue at Pittsburgh Yards will remain open for use until construction starts, which is anticipated in early 2024.

Fiber relocation work impacted the construction mobilization for segments 4 and 5 of the Southside Trail. Cutovers from old to new fiber required scheduled outages of service between several entities and could only take place over the weekends. Due to unforeseen circumstances, planned cutovers required rescheduling. Reeves Young proceeded with material orders and other mobilization activities in order to quickly get into full swing and, at this time, the completion date of the project has not been extended.

Details on each Southside Trail segment can be found in our design and construction updates section: Segments 2, 3, 4, and 5.

  1. Given how long this is going to close these two sections can’t you delay start on section 2 until these are done? I live near the east side beltline and there are few other safe exercise options. Going north is a nightmare since you hit all the tourists on the wrong side leaving scooters everywhere. And then you hit the work in Piedmont park anyway. Just suggesting phasing this not criticising. You have made my life in Atlanta infinitely better!

    1. Hi Bruce, as quickly as we are able, we need to keep building the BeltLine multi-use trail in all parts of the City in order to complete the full 22-mile loop by the end of 2030. We know the connectivity will be rewarding once complete and appreciate everyone’s patience as we work through construction!
