Construction Update Around the Atlanta BeltLine

If you’ve been following Atlanta BeltLine progress, you probably know that construction is going like gangbusters right now, on both the east and west sides of the corridor. To satisfy your curiosity for the latest and greatest Atlanta BeltLine news, here is a little more detail on the state of our projects currently under construction.

Westside Trail

This 3-mile trail presently under construction in southwest Atlanta is on schedule and within budget and is due to be open in late summer 2017. Right now, pavement is being poured on various sections of the corridor, including the area from Lena Street south, nearly to Stafford Street. Vertical connections have been constructed at Lawton Street and Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive, with the ramp and bridge at Lee Street currently being built. The trail from University Avenue to approximately Allene Street near the Urban Farm has been poured, and new trees have been planted (and are blossoming nicely in the warm weather!) next to the farm site. Railings are being erected at the vertical connections, and the foundation for lighting is being installed. Stay tuned for a grand opening date later this year. Additional plantings and landscaping projects will commence after the trail is open for use. A meeting to update the community on construction progress was held February 27. See the presentation here.

Eastside Trail – southern extension

The Eastside Trail’s southern extension is being constructed concurrent with the Westside Trail’s construction. To date, underground infrastructure has been installed from Kirkwood all the way to Krog Street. Pavement has been poured along Wylie Street, along with new curbing and street improvements. The Krog Tunnel has received a lighting upgrade and new pavers, with handrails to be installed within the next several weeks. A full road closure at Irwin Street will commence on March 20 for the construction of a speed table at street’s intersection with the Eastside Trail, improving pedestrian conditions with the addition of a rapid-flashing beacon. This closure is expected to last about 30 days. The extension is expected to open in June, and will include the construction of a pedestrian scramble at the intersection of Dekalb & Wylie and another speedtable on Kirkwood. A portion of the trail between Irwin Street and Edgewood Avenue will remain closed until the completion of the development at 670/690 Dekalb Avenue (North American Properties.) Construction of this development is expected to be complete by the end of 2018. Ultimately, the result will be a safer pedestrian experience for trail users and, in the interim, is approximately the same travel distance to detour around the construction site. An update on the Irwin closure and the construction of the extension was held on March 2. See the presentation here.

Recap:

The entirety of the Westside Trail is a closed construction site until the grand opening later this year. Stay tuned for more details. Those wishing to tour the site can sign up for the Atlanta BeltLine Partnership’s bus tours, which provide a 3-hour tour of the entire corridor navigated by expert tour guides.

The Eastside Trail southern extension is a closed construction site until mid-summer. Upcoming closures include:

  • Irwin Street for the construction of a speedtable beginning March 20 and lasting 30 days.
  • A portion of the Eastside Trail between Edgewood Avenue and Dekalb Avenue for adjacent development through 2018.
  • One lane of the Krog Tunnel for installation of handrails, timeline to be determined.
  • One lane of Wylie Street to complete plantings and pedestrian improvements, timeline to be determined.
  • Kirkwood Avenue for the construction of a speedtable, timeline to be determined.
  • Dekalb Avenue for the construction of a plaza and installation of pedestrian scramble, timeline to be determined.

We apologize for any inconvenience caused by these closures, but we hope you are as excited as we are to see more of the Atlanta BeltLine come together!

  1. What is the expected timeline for further southern extension of the Eastside Beltline down into the Outhside Trail? Any idea when it will make it to Ormewood Park?

    1. Hi Charlie – Phase II of the Eastside Trail’s southern extension to Memorial Drive should begin later this year. The Southside Trail, which goes through Ormewood Park, is in the design process and will begin construction when that process is through. Keep an eye out for updates on the Southside Trail design process as more information becomes available.

We will have another community meeting this fall to give updates. If you would like, we can add you to our email list with specific updates from our community engagement staff on when we’ll be having meetings in your area.

      1. Hi Nicole – could I be added to this list as well(the one providing updates about Southside trail extension)? We live on Mead in Grant Park and are anxious to know as plans change!

        1. Hi Anna,
I have asked our community engagement team to add you to their list for Southside Trail updates.
          Thanks!
