Art on the Atlanta BeltLine 2017 Open Call for Artists

Atlanta BeltLine, Inc. seeks to bring new artistic experiences to trail and park users

AtlantaArt on the Atlanta BeltLine has published an open call seeking artists for the 2017 exhibition. Over the past eight years, the linear gallery space surrounding the Atlanta BeltLine has grown in scope to become the largest temporary outdoor art exhibition in the south. In 2016, nearly 150 visual and performing art installations graced the Eastside Trail, Atlanta BeltLine parks, and the interim hiking trails near Piedmont Park and through Reynoldstown. Last year, more than 1.7 million people visited the Eastside Trail, a two-mile multi-use trail lined with art installations.

Art on the Atlanta BeltLine is seeking proposals that are experiential. Artists should propose work with the Atlanta BeltLine trail user in mind by seeking to answer the following questions: What will you discover on the Atlanta BeltLine? What will be your adventure? Example works include street style performances and art-making along the trails, interactive art pieces, and works that embody navigating urban space as an experience, as well as a place.

The exhibition always welcomes all art forms and all levels of artistic expertise. Each year, Art on the Atlanta BeltLine showcases diverse works of art from local, national, and international artists. Past projects have included murals, sculptures, performance works of all kinds (street and traveling performers, parades, music, dance, acrobats, theater, performance art, etc.), amenities for visitors (such as benches, bike racks, or shade structures), gateway or entrance works, and loans of existing work.

Artists are encouraged to submit creative pieces that reflect the historic, environmental, cultural, functional, urban design, and/or aesthetic aspects of the sites, and that marry their artistic visions with the landscape and sustainability themes of the Atlanta BeltLine.

Projects should be well-researched, well-planned, feasible, and able to withstand the elements for the duration of the exhibition. See previously funded projects at art.beltline.org. For 2017, Atlanta BeltLine, Inc. aims to increase the average grant per project by 15 percent.

The exhibition is scheduled for September through November.

Installation will begin in June and projects must be installed by the opening of the exhibition on September 9. The 2017 exhibition will kick-off on September 9 with the annual, signature Atlanta BeltLine Lantern Parade, created by and featuring Chantelle Rytter and the Krewe of the Grateful Gluttons.

The submission deadline is Monday, May 1, 2017 by 5:00 pm. The call is available for download from art.beltline.org and will also be available for submission through callforentry.org. Electronic submission is available immediately.

A timeline and installation schedule will be developed with each artist or artist team. Four information sessions will be hosted to provide additional information and answer questions around this exciting project.
