What an amazing race! The energy in the air was palpable as more than 500 runners and walkers came together to enjoy this morning of perfect weather, enthusiastic teams, lively entertainment and more for the fourth annual Atlanta BeltLine Southwest 5K at Gordon White Park, along the Atlanta BeltLine Southwest Trail and through the Historic West End and Westview neighborhoods.

In addition to experiencing many popular Art on the Atlanta BeltLine exhibits – such as the West End Remembers mural on White Street – participants enjoyed music and entertainment from B98.5 and on-air personality and fitness guru Madison James, which added to the level of energy and fun at the race. This event also provided participants with one of the last opportunities to experience the southwest hiking trail before construction begins on the Westside Trail this fall.

Arguably one of our most competitive challenges, the Sizzlin’ Southwest Team Challenge pitted teams of runners against each other in a friendly competition to score a $500 cash purse. The competition was steep, but Runningnerds took home both the largest and fastest team prizes, while Back on My Feet won most spirited.

“It’s inspiring to see the community engaging so wholeheartedly in the Atlanta BeltLine Running Series and other fitness activities,” said Atlanta BeltLine Partnership Interim Executive Director and Program Director Rob Brawner. “As more and more of our running events are attended by hundreds and thousands of Atlantans, and trails are filled with runners, walkers, cyclists and beyond, we are making a tangible impact on community health in Atlanta.”

Atlanta BeltLine Southeast 8K

In its second year, the newest event in the Atlanta BeltLine Running Series features a rigorous run through our most challenging course. The Atlanta BeltLine Southeast 8K kicks off at Boulevard Crossing Park on Saturday, Sept. 27 at 9 a.m. and will feature a number of exciting, youth-friendly activities including a 1K Youth Fun Run, special appearances by Cartoon Network characters, Soccer Street Cup and more!

In preparation for the Southeast 8K, our partners at REI are offering two, limited sized group runs to help runners familiarize and condition themselves to the route. Click here for information on and registration for these upcoming events and activities.

Proceeds from the Atlanta BeltLine Running Series support Atlanta BeltLine Partnership programs vital to the Atlanta BeltLine, including tours and other public outreach.

The 2014 Atlanta BeltLine Southwest 5K is sponsored by REI, Cardlytics, Café of Life, and Woblet with support from Resurgens Orthopaedics, VEINInnovations, West Stride, Whole Foods, B98.5, and many in-kind supporters.
