MARTA consultants performing geotechnical boring for transit in the eastside corridor

MARTA consultants performing geotechnical boring for transit in the eastside corridor.

On February 8, contractors for MARTA began geotechnical work on the eastside corridor as part of transit planning for the future light rail system. The sub-contractor, CERM, will be performing boring as part of field investigations and data collection. The work will be performed primarily within the future transit guideway – to the west of the current multiuse trail – between Irwin Street and Ponce de Leon Avenue. Work will also take place within city streets such as Edgewood Avenue, Randolph Street, and Auburn Avenue.

The trail will remain open except for the occasions when work needs to be adjacent to the trail, at which time a partial trail closure may be necessary to ensure the safety of trail users. Weather permitting, CERM is expected to conclude its investigations and data collection scope within 6-8 weeks.

The schedule for the next few weeks includes:

  • Monday (3/7) through Friday (3/11), 8:00 am to 4:00 pm – North Highland Ave to Irwin St

  • Monday (3/14) through Friday (03/18), 8:00 am to 4:00 pm – Ralph McGill to Ponce

As part of delivering the transit infrastructure at the core of the Atlanta Beltline vision, Atlanta Beltline, Inc. (ABI) is partnering with MARTA and the City of Atlanta on extending the Atlanta Streetcar system from its current easternmost point at Jackson Street, along the Atlanta Beltline eastside corridor, to Ponce de Leon Avenue.  The project is part of the More MARTA Atlanta program, adopted by the MARTA Board of Directors in 2018 and funded by the ½-penny sales tax approved by City of Atlanta voters in 2016.  The project is currently in the planning phase, and field investigations are needed to inform the upcoming detailed design and engineering effort.

If you have questions or concerns with respect to the work being performed, you can contact ABI or MARTA.
