JANUARY 23, 2026

If you’ve been longing to practice your biking skills a little closer to home, we have exciting news for you! The City of Atlanta’s first bike park had its groundbreaking ceremony on January 22. Shirley C. Franklin Park (formerly Westside Park) was buzzing with excitement from community members, partners, and leaders including Atlanta Beltline, Inc. President & CEO Clyde Higgs, and Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens as they marked the start of construction for this unique project.

What to look forward to

After phase one of construction is completed, bikers and other wheeled athletes of all skill levels will be able to strengthen their skills and practice their tricks on the berms and rollers on the State-of-the-Art Asphalt Pump Track.

Young riders will be introduced to their favorite new hobby at the Bicycle Playground which will include balance beams, small rollers, and gentle turns to build confidence and basic skills.

Challenging bridges, rock gardens, and tight switchbacks can be found on the Skills Course to give riders an authentic trail experience. Along with 0.75 miles of Hiking Trails for those who enjoy cardio with a view.

The Bike Park’s design ADA-compliant features and the necessary equipment to ensure cyclists of all abilities can enjoy.

Phase two of construction plans to bring 2.25 miles of beginner, intermediate, and expert gravity Mountain Bike Trails to the park.

Health & Hobbies for All

Located adjacent to the Atlanta Beltline Westside Trail in proximity to the neighborhoods of Grove Park, Bankhead, Knight Park, and Howell Station, this new park will join the growing list of Beltline-connected parks, a testament to our mission of building a more equitable and inclusive Atlanta.

“This park represents a significant investment in communities that have historically had limited access to outdoor recreation, serving as a community hub that will spark a lifelong passion for cycling. When families on Atlanta’s Westside and across the city see this park open in their backyard, they’ll see an investment that is real, lasting, and will impact their long-term health and wellness” shared Clyde Higgs, Atlanta Beltline Inc. President & CEO.

The project’s fundraising goal of $18 million is already more than halfway met thanks to generous donations from the Chestnut Family Foundation, Coca-Cola Foundation, Rebecca and John Somerhalder, and DICK'S Sporting Goods Foundation. Phase one of construction is expected to be completed in Fall 2026, with phase two planning to move forward once fully funded.
