Sometimes on a summer night in Atlanta, you can hear the cicadas’ chorus, their rhythmic hum emerging after years of silence. The cicada’s lifecycle tells a powerful story of renewal and transformation, and this September, it inspires a unique artistic performance.
On Saturday, September 28, join us at Westside Park from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. for Amplified Body, an event as part of the Beltline After Dark series. This free, family-friendly performance blends dance, sculpture, fashion, and soundscapes to celebrate the cicada’s journey and its connection to the world of hip-hop.
Just like the cicada, the first sounds of hip-hop were often dismissed as strange noise. But beneath the surface, this new music had the power to touch people's hearts and minds. The cicada's synchronized movements also echo hip-hop's essence: different elements coming together as "One Body, One Sound" to create a powerful rhythm.
At the heart of Amplified Body is PhaeMonae, a skilled movement, wardrobe, and sound engineer. Collaborating with Magdalena O'Connor, Lamia Dingle, and Cailan Orn, PhaeMonae leads a dynamic team that draws on expertise in choreography, sound, wearable art, and fabrication to bring their bold ideas to life.
The performance moves through different locations in the park, unfolding in four phases—emergence, the search for community, joyful creation, and unity for survival—mirroring both the cicada's life cycle and the evolution of hip-hop. As you watch, you'll see how the artists use recycled materials to craft their costumes and props – a nod to hip-hop's spirit of creative resourcefulness and reinvention.
Join us for this magical event under the stars.
