Atlanta Beltline Breaks Ground on Northwest Trail – Segment 5, Marking Major Milestone

The first part of the Northwest Trail is officially under construction! Clyde Higgs, President and CEO of Atlanta Beltline, Inc., along with Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens, city leaders, and community members, celebrated the groundbreaking of Northwest Trail – Segment 5 on June 24th.

Starting north of Marietta Boulevard and Huff Road, the trail will go to Ellsworth Industrial and English Street in Blandtown. It will connect to the Westside Trail – Segment 3, which is completed and runs from Huff Road to Law Street. The 0.7-mile segment, the first full section of the Northwest Trail to begin construction, will take about 17 months to complete.

During the groundbreaking, Higgs celebrated the importance of this segment of the trail and its future regional connectivity, sharing, “Not only is it a key step in linking the 22-mile mainline Beltline loop, but it also provides Atlantans with a regional trail connection to both the Chattahoochee River and the Silver Comet Trail, extending all the way to Alabama.”

Mayor Dickens emphasized that connectivity, adding that, in addition to connecting Atlanta’s neighborhoods, this segment will also make it easier and safer for people, especially kids, to walk and bike.

“This segment of the Atlanta Beltline is going to bring even greater connectivity to Atlanta’s neighborhoods…” Dickens said. “It’s important that our communities – often separated by infrastructure – are now being cultivated as interconnected neighborhoods, linking our citizens to one another, as well as to opportunities for economic prosperity and access to cultural and social amenities, improving their overall health, and enhancing their way of life.”

This segment represents just one section of the Northwest Trail, a section that will eventually connect Blandtown to the Lindbergh/Morosgo neighborhoods. Other areas along the trail include Underwood Hills, Berkeley Park, and Garden Hills.

With ongoing progress and the goal of completing the Beltline project by 2030, residents and visitors can look forward to a more connected and accessible city. This milestone marks not just physical construction but the Beltline’s commitment to improving the quality of life for all Atlantans.
