Whether you’re a new homeowner or have lived in your home for years, applying for all the possible homestead exemptions you are eligible for is one of the best ways to save money. Like a coupon for your property tax bill, it reduces the amount you will owe.
What are homestead exemptions?
Homestead exemptions are special property tax-breaks for owner-occupied properties.
How do I know if I qualify?
In the state of Georgia, the home covered by the homestead exemption should be your legal residence.
If you have owned and occupied your home by January 1 of the current year
If you are the beneficiary of a trust
If you have inherited your home
If you have a life estate
When should I apply?
Right now! Your application must be filed between January 1 and April 1 for the homestead exemption to become effective for the current taxable year.
What is the standard exemption?
In Fulton County, if you own/occupy and use your home as your primary legal residence, you may be granted
Fulton County: $30,000 + floating exemption
City of Atlanta Atlanta: $30,000 + floating exemption
Atlanta Public Schools: $50,000 after first $10,000
