Southside Trail—Segment 1 Now Open! Ribbon Cutting to Follow!

Atlanta BeltLine Southside Trail now open

Post updated September 27, 2021 to reflect scheduled ribbon cutting date.

Construction gates are coming down this week as the highly anticipated Southside Trail—Segment 1 permanently opens to the public. As of Thursday, September 9, Atlanta BeltLine Westside Trail users will be able to continue their walk, ride, or roll another 0.8 miles from the southern terminus of the Westside Trail at University Avenue to Pittsburgh Yards, just west of the I-75/I-85 overpass. The trail then continues in its unpaved state to Glenwood Avenue, along Bill Kennedy Way, and onto the Eastside Trail up to Piedmont Park. More information is available here regarding the remaining unpaved Southside Trail.

A formal ribbon cutting is scheduled for October 12 at 9:30 a.m.

Southside Trail—Segment 1, like other completed segments of the Atlanta BeltLine, features an ADA-accessible concrete trail, granite-clad retaining walls, stormwater management system, fiber duct-banks, lighting, and security cameras. It also includes a new pedestrian bridge over Metropolitan Parkway and two connecting trails at Allene Avenue and Manford Road.  Once cooler weather sets in, Trees Atlanta will install final landscaping.

Thanks to construction coming in under budget, Atlanta BeltLine, Inc. (ABI) leveraged remaining funds to pave a path connecting Allene Avenue and the Southside Trail.  As an added amenity for the community, ABI will be installing lights and cameras at the Allene Avenue connector and adding cameras to the existing light poles installed at the Manford Road connector, both of which are key access points to the trail. This work is anticipated to be completed during the first quarter of 2022, and this additional work can be completed without any trail closures. ABI is continuing to work with Atlanta DOT (ATLDOT) on the connection between the Southside Trail and the Capitol View Manor neighborhood via Manford Road and Erin Avenue and updates will be shared as they are available.

  1. I am so excited to hear about the opening of the SouthSide Trail. The bike is ready and so I am to check it out this morning. I was living in another city when I heard about the Beltline after living in the Atlanta area for about 15 years. You cannot imagine my joy of returning to this area and finding such a wonderful project after being gone for nearly 15 years. Great work!

  2. used to walk from carver HS to sylvan rd. via what’s now the metropolitan av. belt line bridge. wished it was there then
