City of Atlanta and Atlanta BeltLine, Inc. Launch Design Review Committee

Committee will set framework for highest design standards for projects in Atlanta BeltLine Planning Area

ATLANTA – On March 2, 2015, the Atlanta City Council passed legislation to approve a Design Review Committee (DRC) to be managed by Atlanta BeltLine, Inc. (ABI). The purpose of the DRC is to achieve the highest design standards for all projects in the Atlanta BeltLine Planning Area. The DRC will provide recommendations to the City of Atlanta Office of Planning for projects in the Atlanta BeltLine Planning Area and will work to ensure compliance with the Atlanta BeltLine Overlay and the Subarea Master Plan goals.

The Subarea Master Plans, developed by ABI and the City of Atlanta between 2007 and 2012, address land use within a half-mile of the Atlanta BeltLine corridor (the planning area) to create a framework of thoughtful, transit-oriented development that supports future population growth and transit ridership. The master plans have been shaped and informed by neighborhood residents offering detailed feedback. The DRC will help guide development according to those plans.

The Design Review Committee will consist of eight members serving in a professional capacity. The eight-member committee will be comprised of:

  • The ABI Director of Design
  • The ABI Director of Program Management
  • The ABI Director of Community Planning and Engagement
  • The City of Atlanta Director of Office of Planning and Community Development
  • Two licensed independent consultant architects
  • An independent city planning professional
  • A member of the Tax Allocation District Advisory Committee with design experience and expertise

ABI is currently seeking volunteers to fill the three independent positions on the committee. Committee members must meet all qualifications criteria and must be confirmed by appointment by the Atlanta City Council in order to serve. Committee members will serve a two-year term and may be reappointed when the term expires. Potential candidates should be able to commit to at least one monthly evening meeting, and special call meetings as deemed necessary and have the ability to devote 2‐4 hours per month to review all Special Administrative Permit Applications in advance of the DRC meetings.
