eX² Technology Partners with Atlanta BeltLine, Inc. to Transform Railroad Corridor into a Technology-Rich Corridor

Omaha, Neb., October 2, 2018 – eX² Technology announced today the execution of a public-private partnership (P3) with Atlanta BeltLine, Inc. (ABI) to design and deploy an accelerated communications network that follows along an abandoned railroad corridor to be completed mid-summer 2019. The network will be used to advance ABI’s internal communications and other smart city and public safety initiatives, including Wi-Fi, lighting and security technology along the BeltLine. This effort is part of the Atlanta BeltLine’s larger 2030 Strategic Implementation Plan for developing a system of underground utility ducts meant to hold fiber optic cable, electric and other utility and communications infrastructure.

“ABI’s success is built on developing and fostering unique P3s,” said Clyde Higgs, interim president and CEO. “Bringing in private sector innovation and capital enables expedited project delivery, reduces public cost and progresses our goal for bringing the people of Atlanta together.”

The final system will be a 22-mile route that is designed to better equip the BeltLine for serving as a smart corridor, providing a springboard for connectivity to homes, businesses, roadways, schools, healthcare, light poles, traffic signals and other related infrastructure.

“This broadband network is the foundation for a more connected, service-rich Atlanta,” said Misty Stine, executive vice president, eX² Technology. “This partnership will advance our mutual goal for creating a sustainable environment that enables limitless opportunities for innovations along the BeltLine, including expanded small cell capability, data center connectivity and broadband expansion to surrounding businesses and neighborhoods.”

Following deployment, eX² Technology will manage and maintain the system as well as serve as a leasing agent on behalf of the BeltLine, promoting available duct, dark fiber and wireless capacity to those seeking to expand their reach within the Atlanta market.

“We chose to partner with eX² because of its vision and ability to support our goal for putting Atlanta on a path to 21st century economic growth and sustainability,” said Jerald Mitchell, director of economic development, Atlanta BeltLine, Inc. “The BeltLine’s technology-rich corridor will attract new businesses and developers, facilitating job growth, inclusive transportation for all and a safer, more integrated community.”

Construction of the accelerated communications infrastructure is expected to begin in January 2019.
