More than 1,200 runners and walkers — many with pets and strollers in tow — turned out to the Lee + White Development in Historic West End on Saturday, July 14 for the 8th annual Atlanta BeltLine Westside 5k/8k, presented by Delta Air Lines. Conditions were ideal for a morning run, hosted for the very first time on the Westside Trail which opened to the public last fall. New for this year: an 8K distance option and an after-party at Monday Night Garage.
The race is part of the Atlanta BeltLine Partnership‘s (ABP) Run.Walk.Go! Race Series which seeks to get people of all fitness levels out and active while exploring new sections of the Atlanta BeltLine. ABP will also host the Eastside 10K on the Eastside Trail on Saturday, December 1.
The day started on an uplifting note with opening comments by historian and author Dr. Karcheik Sims-Alvarado, curator of “Atlanta and the Civil Right Movement: 1944-1968,” a recently installed Art on the Atlanta BeltLine photography exhibition which participants passed as they ran along the Westside Trail.

Next up: Atlanta BeltLine Fitness Ambassador Madison James led the group in a spirited warm-up just before the group moved out onto White St. to line up for the start of the race.

Before the race started, Atlanta City Councilmember (District 4) Cleta Winslow and Atlanta Public Schools Board Chair Jason Estevez welcomed everyone to the event on behalf of the city, and everyone was treated to an amazing rendition of the National Anthem by Tiffany Uzoije from The Atlanta Opera. Uzoije’s performance is part of the “Belting on the BeltLine” collaboration between ABP and the Opera, which brings free performances to different locations along Atlanta BeltLine parks and trails.

Following the race, participants were treated to an after-party at Monday Night Garage as awards were handed out to overall and age group winners.

For the third year in a row, West End Mavericks won the largest team award.

The top individual fundraiser award went to Adrienne White, a member of ABP’s AB67 young leadership group. Adrienne’s fundraising team Team ADubb’s Crew also won this year’s top fundraising team award.
