10th Street Cycle Track

A partnership between the City of Atlanta, the PATH Foundation, and the Midtown Alliance has facilitated the construction of Atlanta’s first “cycle track,” a two-way bike lane on 10th Street near Piedmont Park, between Monroe Drive and Charles Allen Drive.

The cycle track connects to the Atlanta BeltLine’s Eastside Trail at Monroe Drive. This portion of the track is scheduled for completion in early August, and is part of a longer track that will eventually reach all the way to Peachtree Street. The cycle track is one of 26 new projects that the City of Atlanta is prioritizing to enhance bicycle safety and efficiency for cyclists.

Part of the construction of the cycle track will include three ramps for Piedmont Park access. Once completed, the track will be marked with bright green pavement at intersections, and a buffer and plastic posts will mark its separation from the road. Data gathered from the Cycle Atlanta app, which found that Eastside Trail enjoys significant bike commuting use, also found that 10th Street is a popular commuter route to Midtown for bicyclists. The track is an important connection from the Atlanta BeltLine to the heart of Midtown.

Transit and transportation are central elements of the Atlanta BeltLine project, in particular more infrastructure to allow safe travel for pedestrians and bicyclists. Projects like the cycle track encourage bicycling as an alternative to automobiles and make the commute safer for bicyclists, complementing and strengthening the efforts of the Atlanta BeltLine.

  1. This has been a great addition to the belt line, and to Atlanta’s livability. Bravo! Why not extend it to Georgia Tech via 10th, hitting some major corporations (CNN, Google, PWC, etc), sports venues (basketball stadium at Tech), and condo high-rises along the way? Would greatly enhance commute options for midtowners.
Going to the Midtown MARTA station would be an alternative target.
