2012 Running Series Kicks Off With the Atlanta BeltLine Northside 5K!

Over 600 runners and walkers rocked the Atlanta BeltLine’s Northside Trail this past Saturday, April 28, 2012 for our second annual Northside 5k race! The course started in Tanyard Creek Park and wound through the beautiful Collier Hills, Collier Hills North, and Ardmore Park neighborhoods. Runners and walkers started arriving at 7 a.m. for warm-ups, announcements, the National Anthem sung by Atlanta BeltLine volunteer Ron Smith, and an 8 a.m. start. Cool, clear weather, a flat start, and plenty of volunteer support all added up to a great race.

The Atlanta Fire Department and Atlanta Police Department were out in full force, too, with APD running together in formation and calling cadence. The Fire Department lined up in front at the start and gave the APD a run for their money. Thank you to all of our first responders for a competitive race and for all you do for us every day!

The Atlanta Police and Fire Departments faced off in a re-match of last year’s friendly competition among our hometown heroes (which the Police swept last time). The members of each department competed for individual medals awarded to the top 3 finishers in the Police/Fire category. Chief Cochran and Chief Turner both ran in support of their departments, but only the department with the fastest aggregate time among their top 20 finishers takes home the Police/Fire Trophy and bragging rights for a year.
This year, the police got to take home the trophy again!

An impromptu push-up challenge after the race resulted in a tie between the two organizations.

Winner of the Media Challenge

We had a strong showing by members of the media for the Northside 5k’s Media Challenge! This year’s winner, representing CBS Atlanta, is Katie Brace. This is Katie’s second time winning the Media Challenge and this year, she also came in first overall female. Congratulations Katie!

Overall Winners of the Field Day Challenge

Immediately following the 5k, we hosted a free, family-friendly Field Day Challenge sponsored by the Atlanta Community Tool Bank and JFitness Body Solutions. Adults and kids participated in a Frisbee-throwing contest, sack races, tire roll, dizzy shoe sprint, and wheelbarrow sprint with tool pickup.

And the winner was… Team St. Val from the Atlanta Police Department! Prizes went to the top six finishing teams and included a range of gardening and workout goodies.
